NATURAL GAS FOR VEHICLES (CNG)More than 10'000 vehicles are powered with natural gas in Switzerland. Natural gas/biogas for vehicles has many benefits on an environmental level but also as a cost-effective alternative.
Its environmental potential is mainly due to the fact it contributes to reducing CO2 emissions by 39%, thanks to the supply of 20% renewable and CO2-neutral biogas. The ozone production potential is 50 times lower with gas-powered vehicles. Pollutants released are 60 to 95% lower than from petrol or diesel engines. Furthermore, emissions from gas-powered vehicles are almost entirely free from carcinogens and soot particles.
On a cost-effective point of view, CNG is much cheaper than other fuels. The higher purchase price for the vehicle is compensated by the lower taxes and insurance premiums, depending on the canton and the insurance company and also by the financial incentive for purchasing. In several towns, such as Lausanne, Bern, Basel, Vevey and Montreux, public transport is now powered with natural gas/biogas. In addition, more and more companies equip their fleet with gas-powered vehicles.
The number of filling stations is constantly increasing: there are now 130 stations in Switzerland of which more than thirty in French-speaking Switzerland.

BIOGAS AS A FUELProduced from domestic and agricultural waste and from wastewater sludge, biogas fuel has an entirely neutral carbon balance. For several years now, the gas industry has been promoting the injection of biogas into its networks. In 2011, biogas accounted for 21% of the total volume of natural gas for vehicles sold in Switzerland.
