Gaznat is involved in various projects such as hydrocarbon prospection in the Lake Geneva region, the construction of a new gas pipeline, the development of a trading company and a future project in Chavalon.
Four current projects are described below:
GTC PROJECT (TRÉLEX - COLOVREX GAS PIPELINE)The project for the construction of a new gas pipeline between Trélex (canton of Vaud) and Colovrex (Bellevue, canton of Geneva) is ongoing. With a length of 24 kilometres, this high-pressure pipeline will be connected at one end on the Transjura gas pipeline linking La Cure to Gland, near Trélex and at the other end, to the South Geneva gas pipeline. The aim of the project is to meet the increasing demand for natural gas and to guarantee a good equilibrium in the Western Switzerland network.
The route was carefully chosen to comply with federal standards in terms of pipeline installation safety but also with environmental requirements and town and country planning.
Public consultation was carried out between the 12th June and the 13th July 2009. The plan approval decision will be usued in September 2011. The gas pipeline construction is expected to start early in 2012. Read the interview of Gilles Verdan, Deputy Manager at the head of Networks (French version only).
HYDROCARBON EXPLORATION BELOW LAKE GENEVAPetrosvibri SA, held by Gaznat (66%) and Holdigaz (34%), is exploring for oil and gas resources in Switzerland.
Research carried out in the Chablais area (in the cantons of Vaud and Valais), indicated a good potential for hydrocarbon accumulations. Following a public consultation of the drilling program, the first deep well was spudded in November 2009 near Noville (VD) in the lower Rhône valley. Great precautions had been taken due to the proximity of the Grangettes natural reserve. This exploration well confirmed the presence of gas in the deep subsurface of Lake Geneva – however no oil. The test results were complex and required very careful processing. The rock samples were analyzed in various laboratories around the world.
SET Swiss Energy TradingIn March 2009, the regional companies EGO, GVM and EGZ, together with Swissgas, created the SET Swiss Energy Trading SA. 65% of the capital stock is held by Swissgas and the remainder by the German gas operator, VNG. The objective of this structure is to further optimise short-term gas procurement.
COMBINED CYCLE POWER PLANTSNatural gas is also used in combined cycle power plants designed to produce heat and electricity simultaneously. The EOS/Alpiq project in Chavalon is an example of such a power station. In this project, Gaznat is in charge of the construction of the pipeline from Chessel to the Chavalon site for supplying gas to the plant.
