Switzerland's first Power-to-Gas demonstrator successfully tested in Sion.
The first pilot project for a methanation reactor and integration of the Power-to-Gas system installed in Sion's pressure reduction and metering station (PDC) is the first of its kind in Switzerland. Tested on site in an industrial environment since the beginning of September 2020, this project was developed in the laboratories of EPFL Valais Wallis, in close collaboration with Gaznat, and with the support of Innosuisse. The methanation reactor installed in the Sion PDC converts over 99% ofCO2. This is the highest conversion rate of any Power-to-Gas technology on the market. The process involves converting renewable electricity into hydrogen by electrolysis. Methanation then combines the hydrogen withCO2 to produce synthesis gas, which is then injected into the distribution network of OIKEN, the owner of this regulating and metering station and a partner in the project. At a later stage in the industrialization of the Power-to-Gas process, the aim is to produce this renewable energy continuously.
